[UPDATE] -- Valdosta, Ga. -- June 8, 2012 -- 6:45PM --

A massive drug bust has led to the arrest of the head of a Children's Advocacy Center. This arrest really did catch this community off guard. Eyewitness News reporter Eames Yates spoke with neighbors who lived next door to Joseph Driggers in Lake Park. They said they noticed how his car would leave at odd hours of the night. But they never expected a drug bust.

Marijuana, money and guns. It's not what you'd expect to find at the home of the Executive Director for the Children's Advocacy Center of Lowndes County. But it's exactly what investigators with the Sheriff's Office found after two search warrants on homes owned by Joseph Driggers. Investigators recovered 10 pounds of marijuana and 8 marijuana plants at this house, owned by Driggers. But when they went to his primary residence they realized it was just the beginning.

Lowndes County Sheriff Chris Prine said "there they found $1,100 dollars currency, 4 pounds of marijuana, point one grams of cocaine, 4 shot guns, one of which was a sawed off shot gun which is illegal."

The Children's Advocacy Center of Lowndes County's board of directors were quick to place Driggers on leave without pay. But it still caught the community off guard.

Valdosta resident and parent Katie Wiggins said "I think when someone serves as a role model in our community, and has such an important job for children in our community, it's very shocking and disappointing."

Sandra Wilcher is the Board Chair of the Children Advocacy Center. She said "I was very heartbroken, shocked, and certainly saddened. I was at a lose for words actually."

Driggers is currently being held at the Lowndes County Jail. He's charged with manufacturing and trafficking marijuana. He's also charged with possession of cocaine and a sawed off shot gun. Sheriff Chris Prine said that Driggers has been denied bond.

The Children’s Advocacy Center of Lowndes County, Inc. (CAC) was shocked and saddened today to learn of the arrest of Executive Director, Joseph Driggers.

Driggers became Executive Director of the CAC April 2012. As of today, the Board of Directors of the CAC has unanimously placed Driggers on leave without pay, pending further investigation by law enforcement.

The Board has named Delthia Conrad as Interim Director of the CAC. Conrad was the chair of the initial task force that formed the CAC in 1997 and has remained actively involved since that time.

The core mission of the CAC to minimize the trauma of child abuse by responding to their immediate and long term needs in a child friendly, safe environment does not waiver. The CAC will continue under the leadership of the Interim Director and the CAC’s professional staff. Therapeutic services will continue. The CAC will moved forward and has a passion for the prevention and treatment of child abuse in this community.

The CAC offers a facility where representatives from law enforcement, child protective services, prosecution, mental health, and the medical community collaborate to investigate, treat, and prosecute child abuse cases.

Further questions should be directed to the CAC to the Board Chair, Sandra Wilcher.

I'm a girl, don't mess too much with guns..but why is a sawed off shotgun illegal? just wondering..

Wow. This just proves you can do drugs and still make something of yourself. Having coke and a sawed-off shotgun was stupid, but growing/smoking weed...not that big of a deal to rational people who can think critically. Some very industrious folks on the "wrong" side of the drug war.

Thank you Collins and Good Man. I'm glad to see that there are a few people that still know what a good person he is. Let's be real here - Let the dust settle and see what the real truth is. So he has guns. Most men around here have guns. So one was modified. It doesn't mean he had it with ill intentions. Maybe it was passed down from a family member. So he had a little bit of money on him. Maybe he had just cashed some paychecks. Maybe he had the other stuff or maybe it was someone else's. Who knows right now. Either way - Joseph Driggers is a good man who has done more good for this community than most people could ever hope to do. What happened doesn't change who he is on the inside!!!

Good Deeds, I am glad to see that someone can think there is another side to what is in the media. People are too quick to jump to conclusions. Joseph is a good person. He has made mistakes, but we all have. According to the bible, a sin is a sin, no matter what. Another words, gossiping is as bad as murder. So thank you for your kind words. :)

Amen, Good Deeds! Joseph is an amazing person. I don't know what was going through his mind or why he did this, but he's a caring, committed person that has made a difference in the lives of hundreds of kids that needed his help.

  • by Good Man on Jun 9, 2012 at 07:16 AM
Agreed Good Deeds. Joseph is a good, good person who has done great things for the CAC and for all of the children it serves. It was his passion to help hurting children. Remember folks, growing is LEGAL in Colorado and many other states. The cocaine is the part of this that I cannot understand.

That "mindless liberal" nailed Bin Laden and has made being an Al Qaeda leader the most dangerous occupation in the world. This HAS happened, and Obama had nothing to do with it. Remember Reagan and his old pal Noriega? Iran/Contra arms-for-drugs policy? The mindless ones are the lower 99% of Republicans who buy into the policies of the top 1%. You are pitiful because you voting against your own interests because of the prejudices and fear that seems to have become the GOP's dogma. Ignorance is no excuse for that.

Open your eyes "country boy". you have been had just like nearly half of this once great country. If Obama had his way, we would have never been in Afganistan, Gitmo [where most of our intelligence comes from] would have been closed, and we would have pulled out of Iraq BEFORE they had a gov't up and running and were able to take care of themselves. Everything BO has accomplished in fighting terror is directly tied to GW Bush policies. Oh, I bet gop is really a liberal trying to push someones buttons. You've been had, again.

Obama is just the face of our nation. He "himself" does not pass laws. Yes, he may voice his opinion and how he thinks our nation should handle certain situations, however, he himself does not make the final say. Our government votes on it. Please educate your self before you say stupid comments, basically insinuating that ONE SINGLE MAN has destroyed our nation all by himself.

You are mindless. you think that one man has single handedly taken down our nation? Educate yourself please. please read up on the government and how it works. this is not obamas fault. and may i ask, what are you doing for our nation? how are you bettering our nation? because we all know it isnt with your ignorant comments and stupidity.

Why don't you wait until to get the full story before pass judgement on someone. The news has a way of showing all the worst things people do and none of the good. He is a good man who has done a lot of good things for the CAC and for many children in this community. It has been his life's work and his passion. Remember - not everything is as it seems. Especially when 'seen on TV' or 'being gossiped about'.
