Valdosta, GA - Its not uncommon to see homeless people in the community, but with temperatures dropping all over the Southeast, for some, the cold weather becomes a life or death situation.
Martin Classens knows this all too well. "This morning it was pretty chilly, but if you don't get up and go anywhere, you don't get anything. "
In Valdosta, many people turn to Ms. Cookie, a local woman who has made it her mission to help those in need.
Margie Guyton or "Ms.Cookie", the CEO Love in Action with Compassion says,"It's cold for them, they're struggling. They need someone to care. They catch colds out there. It's misery for them, but they're trying to survive, and that's why I say they need our love, our compassion, and our prayers."
Every day Ms. Cookie feeds Valdosta's homelesss at the ride share on 38 West, but with the temperatures dropping and the need rising, she says she can't do it alone.
"I need the help of the community, I need the help of South Georgia, North Florida, South Florida, Alabama. I just need the help of everybody. "
Lisa Carlisle says she doesn't know where she'd be without the help of Ms. Cookie. "I've really liked her, I've loved her. She's done a lot for us. She's gotten us clothes and meals, anything she can do for us. She gets them through donations also, so she can only do so much. "
If you would like to help the homeless, please call Ms. Cookie at (229) 548-0525.
The items in need for winter are coats, hats, gloves, thermal underwear, blankets, and she says she's always in need of toiletries.
