Flowers Foods says it's agreed to purchase the Philadelphia-based Tasty Baking Company, which is famous for its Tastykake brand.

The company will shell out a cool 34 million in cash for the company.

Flowers President Allen Shiver says he thinks the acquisition will only strengthen the company and widen its customer pool.

"The primary reason for the merger with TastyKake is to grow total top line sales, so the opportunity with TastyKake on Flowers routes is also using TastyKake customer relationships and access to markets." Shiver says.

Tasty Baking Company says it's also 'excited' about the merger and the fact that its products will continue to be manufactured in Philadelphia.

Thank GOODNESS, those wonderful tastykakes will live. I have personal experience with lack of QC. Have always gone to the Choc. Jr. for a special treat. Lately, no icing on top and much smaller in size. Please keep the old tasty receipe. Thanks

Thank goodness for Flower Foods! I can't imagine a world without Tastykake! Always had a Tasty product in my lunch bag everyday back in the 60's and 70's. Usually the Butterscotch Krimpets which are the BEST! Some things should never end.

I give my kids that whitewheat bread. They won't eat wheat bread so I give them the whitewheat. The get healthy. Does Flowers have any other bakeries in Florida?

I just hope TastyKake is as good as Mrs Freshley's Cake that I buy at Walmart. I like those because they are better and less expensive than little Debbie so I put them in my children's lunch. Mr. Shiver: Whatever happened to a type of bread y'all made years ago called " Warsaw Rye" It was an unusual bread and brought back a lot of memories. Can I still buy it here in Tallahassee.

Dear Mr Shiver: I just purchased some of your Nature's Own Sandwich Rounds at Publix. They are delicious as well as being only 100 calories. I saw a few varieties of Tasty products and bought one to try. When will you be able to get them in Walmart? I am a big fan of Nature's Own Bread too! That is all my family eats because it is made locally and your company provides jobs for our citizens. Thank-you for being a good corporate citizen!
