FORT BENNING, Ga -- June 24, 2012
Two military commanders who played key roles in uniting the Army's infantry and armor schools at Fort Benning are leaving the Georgia post for new assignments.
The Ledger-Enquirer reports that Armor School commander Brig. Gen. Thomas James is heading to Fort Hood, Texas, to serve as deputy commander of the 1st Armored Division. Meanwhile, Col. Walter E. Piatt, commander of the Infantry School at Fort Benning, is going to the 10th Mountain Division at Fort Drum, N.Y.
Both officers said farewell to west Georgia during a ceremony Friday.
James and Piatt were instrumental in moving the Armor School to Georgia from Knox, Ky., after the last round of base closings in 2005. The Armor School was merged with Fort Benning's existing Infantry School.
