The Coast Guard says it is searching for an Army staff sergeant from Fort Stewart who went missing while swimming off the coast of St. Simons Island.
The Guard said in a news release late Sunday that it was notified by the staff sergeant's wife at around 5:20 p.m. that the 30-year-old man got caught in a rip current and was swept out to sea.
Air and boat rescue crews were launched shortly afterward. The Brunswick County Sheriff's Office and the Georgia Department of Natural Resources assisted in the search.
The Army said in a news release that the soldier was with the Third Infantry Division. But a Fort Stewart spokesman said in an email that the post was still confirming other details.
