Atlanta, GA (AP) - The Senate on Monday unanimously passed legislation that would pay benefits to state highway employees injured or killed in the line of duty.
The bill was inspired by Spencer Pass, a state Department of Transportation "HERO" operator killed last month while helping a motorist on Interstate 85 south of downtown Atlanta. If approved, the proposed legislation would apply to Pass' family.
The bill passed the Senate 52-0. Sponsored by Republican Sen. Steve Gooch of Dahlonega, the legislation would make state highway employees eligible for payments for partial or total disabilities, death or brain damage. It would apply to all incidents occurring after January 1.
The bill now heads to the House.
