Atlanta, GA (AP) - Forecasters say a few areas in Georgia broke decades-old weather records as a heat wave continues in the state.

The National Weather Service says Atlanta, Columbus and Athens had record highs on Thursday. Macon reached 86 degrees to tie a previous record set in 1977.

Atlanta had a high of 82 degrees, barely eclipsing the mark of 81 degrees that was set in 1973. Columbus and Athens each had highs of 85 degrees.

Columbus beat a previous high of 83 degrees in 1989, and Athens ended a 91-year record of 84 degrees in 1921.

The weather service is predicting more heat for the weekend, with a high near 81 on Friday and near 83 on Saturday in Atlanta.
