Colquitt, GA- Miller County Schools Superintendent Robert McIntosh is out of a job.

The decision was made Tuesday night by a Board of fresh faces, appointed by Governor Nathan Deal in September 2012.

McIntosh was suspended with pay on October 1st and Miller County Middle School Principal Robert Melton has since stepped in to serve as interim Superindentient.

The shake-up came after a state investigation revealed dysfunction between the Board's previous members, which resulted in the school losing it's 'Southern Association of Colleges and Schools' or SACs accreditation.

"There certainly were Board problems prior to us, among the other Board, but there were also many problems in the leadership side, particularly from the Superintendent stand point, and those matters had to be addressed," said Buddy Johnson, the newly appointed Chairman of the Miller County BOE.

People in the community we spoke to said they are not at all surprised by the Board's decision to let McIntosh go. Some say they hope the next step will be getting the schools' accreditation back.

"We want our children to go to college. We want our children to finish school and we don't want anything hampering their education, anything at all," said Jessie Roland, a Miller County resident.

"We've had a lot of students leave Miller County, going to Seminole County, going to SGA, and you know it's bad when you have your own kids leaving," added Robert Lane, also a Miller County resident.

As for a replacement, Johnson says they have two potential candidates.

"They are both qualified, good guys, seem to be very on top of it," he said. "They're both retired Superintendents from other regions and very qualified for the job."

McIntosh's last day on payroll will be November 15th.

Johnson says the Board hopes to get the schools' accreditation back by January 2013.

Colquitt, GA - Governor Nathan Deal has appointed five new members to serve on the Miller County Board of Education.

The shake-up comes following an investigation by the Georgia Board Of Education.

The school was evaluated by the Georgia Board, after being placed on probation by SACs accreditation agency for dysfunctional" behavior among the board's previous members.

Buddy Johnson has been appointed to serve as Chairman of the Miller County Board of Education. He said, "We know we can complete the task and get our accreditation back to where it needs to be and I think this board is clear in saying, we don't just want to make it up to par, we want to make it to be the best."

After being sworn in on Monday night, the new members suspended Superintendent Robert McIntosh for 30 days pending further investigation. The Georgia Board reported; "a lack of respect and professional conduct among and between the board members and the Superintendent."

"We did the administrative leave with pay, not as disciplinary action but just simply so we can get this investigation done, and done fairly and get it completed as quickly as possible."

The focus can now be back on the students.

"This is all for our children to get a good education and get our school system back to where it needs to be and make it the best in the state," said Johnson.

Ruth Miller has a daughter who teaches within the Miller County School system, as well as grandchildren who attend Miller County schools. She said she was not surprised by the replacement of board members.

"It's a small community and everybody knows what's going on and we saw it coming," she said. "We're really hoping that things will turn out better than they were before."

The other four new board members include Monica Posey, Richard Little, Billy Roland and Craig Tully.

Robert Melton, the Miller County Middle School Principal, will serve as interim superintendent.
