Governor Deal Removes Entire Miller County School Board

Members of The Miller County School Board cursed at each other and threatened to fire school employees - forcing governor Nathal Deal to step in.

"Governor Deal...has established a nominating committee to nominate the citizens of Miller County to take the place of the present board of education," said Miller County High School principal Frank Killingsworth.

The committee will be looking for people to serve the remainder of the five board member's terms - until they are named, however, the current board members will stay put. But the situation as a whole has some fearing that people will think that the school system has failed.

"Quite often in situations similar to this, there are innocent casualties, and I don't want our school system to be that casualty," said Board of Education Cirriculum Director James Phillips.

The school system achieved a 100% highly qualified teachers rating from the Professional Standards Commission. The elementary, middle, and high schools have all met the state's Adequate Yearly Performance standards.

"Although the board is over our school system, it is not THE school system," said Phillips.

When asked whether or not he thought the decision was fair, Killingsworth responded "Do I think it's fair? I can't comment because I don't know. That's up to the Governor and the citizens of Miller County."

Everybody thinks Deal should have done this to the board. However, I am quite sure that a few months after this, everybody will see that he is going to replace the members with his friends and things are going to change. This man is the duplicate of Rick Scott and this is where the trouble will begin. Instead of getting rid of them, he should have sat down with them and get to the bottom of the problem. This nation is in trouble and we are allowing things to happen that is creating chaos in our lives. I am quite sure that privitization is going to come up and the school system is going to suffer.

I spent much of my youth staying with my grandparents in Colquitt. My grandmother recently died a peaceful death in Colquitt. She lived there all of her adult life. While she was suffering from dementia, I met a number of wonderful people from Colquitt. There was Terry Toole, whom I had never met...he brought her the newspaper every wednesday in person without fail. There was Joe Chapman, who recently died too, who sat by her side daily. There was the mayor, Jerry Chapman who has done wonderful things for the city of Colquitt. I met a 90 year old wonderful lady who brought Flowers from the church. She also brought a smile and provide some comfort. Colquitt is a great American Small Town. Many incredible salt of the earth people. Honor them, both living and dead by getting this school board mess behind us. There are many good non-partisan people willing to serve this great community. I am saddened at the current behavior of the school board having to be removed. They must have been doing something terrible to be the first schoo; board in the history of our state to be removed.Elect some good honest citizens like I have met over the years. People like Buddy-boy Grimes, Sue Ann Chapman, Rose Mary Grow, The nice 90 year old person who always has a smile, Mayor Jerry Chapman...good honest people

Completely unacceptable. All five of these "board members" need to be replaced IMMEDIATELY. In their immaturity they have failed the people, they have failed the faculty, staff and employees of the school system; but most shameful of all is they have failed the students. These people are completely unprofessional and without credibility.

Gov Deal needs to move to Florida and take a look at the Jefferson co school system if he wants to see PROBLEMS.
