HIV-Positive Man in Georgia Gets Life for Rape

Lawrenceville, GA (AP) - An HIV-positive man was sentenced to
life plus 10 years in prison after prosecutors say he raped a woman
at a Lawrenceville psychiatric hospital.

Assistant District Attorney Teresa Klein tells The Atlanta
Journal-Constitution that a Gwinnett County jury convicted
28-year-old Wesley Randall Hatfield of rape and reckless conduct.

Police say that in September 2007, Hatfield sneaked into a
female patient's room at the SummitRidge Center for Psychiatry &
Addiction Medicine, where he was also a patient. Prosecutors say he
raped thw woman while she was asleep and on sedatives. The female
patient did not contract HIV.

Under Georgia law, it is a felony for people who know they have
HIV or hepatitis to knowingly engage in sexual intercourse without
disclosing their condition.
