Associated Press Release

WOODSTOCK, Ga. (AP) -- Law officers say motorists are reporting more collisions with bears on roads and highways just north of Atlanta.

The Cherokee County Sheriff's Office says at least eight bears have been struck and killed on roadways in as many weeks in the county. CBS Atlanta reports (http://bit.ly/1abiWzp) that three of the bears were killed by vehicles on Interstate 575.

Cherokee County sheriff's Lt. Jay Baker said the number of recent bear deaths on roadways in the county is very unusual.

Adam Hammond, a wildlife biologist with the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, says a shortage of acorns in the bear's normal range in the north Georgia mountains has caused them to roam into neighborhoods north of Atlanta in search of food.
