A new poll sponsored by the US Department of Transportation and Consumer Reports magazine, shows 63 percent of a group surveyed under the age of 30 have used a cell phone while driving, while 30 percent in the same group say they've texted while driving.

The Thomas County Sheriff's Office says the majority of teen crashes they see could have been prevented if the driver wasn't distracted.

Says Capt. Steve Jones with TCSO, "It's very dangerous to take your eyes off the road for that little time it takes to focus from the road, down to the text message in your hand, then back to the road."

Consumer Reports says teens are involved in three times as many fatal crashes as other drivers.

They also say the risk of a crash is 23 times more likely while texting.
