Moultrie, GA-October 19, 2012
Dolly and Bud Stringer have been married for 20 years. They do everything together and that includes battling cancer.
"Our surgeon said, 'Well, when you guys do it, ya'll go big I'll give ya that,'" said Bud.
Dolly was diagnosed with breast cancer in April 2012. After two weeks of chemotherapy, she decided to shave her head. Bud then surprised the family by shaving his head to show his support.
"They said, 'Well it looks good, except for that big ugly black spot on your head' and I just assumed it was a birth mark so I called my mother and she said, 'no you didn't have a birth mark.' So we thought maybe it was a mole, a lot of different things, anything but cancer," said Bud.
Days later, Bud was diagnosed with an aggressive from of melanoma skin cancer.
"His diagnosis was much more devastating than mine because it's easier to go through something yourself as a wife, as a mother and I know how difficult it was and it was going to be for him," said Dolly.
Diane Herndon has been a long time family friend of the Stringer's. She recalled the first time she spoke with Bud after learning about the cancer. "The first thing he said to me was, 'Di, we're going to be okay. God's on our side,' and I thought how can you be so optimistic about
Bud is scheduled next week to start a year of chemotherapy treatments. Dolly just finished her treatments two weeks ago. Despite it all, the Stringer Family stands strong.
"We, everyday, see the best in people," said Dolly. "I didn't know how great people's hearts were until this experience."
Dolly and Bud's youngest son Slater added, "It's going to be okay and they're gonna get through this."
A 5K and one mile fun run is scheduled for Saturday October 20, 2012 in Moultrie to benefit the Stringer Family.
