Inmates Volunteer for Good Cause

The prisoners were all smiles as they tie-dyed t-shirts, painted decorations and baked cookies for the Grady County Sheriff's Office Relay for Life team.

The jail's administrator, Capt. Tim Gainous, says in addition to helping a good cause, the volunteer work can also be 'therapeutic.'

Says Gainous, "We find that inmates are so often self-centered. They can only think of themselves - that's usually what got them in here - and this gives them an opportunity to ... do something good for somebody else."

The Relay for Life started at 6 o'clock Friday evening at Cairo High School and will run until midnight.

If prisoners worked on highway construction projects like they did in the 1960s when I was a kid, the Department of Transportation would not need as much money to fund their department and taxpayers would not be stuck with the bill. I pay property taxes in Grady County, so I hope these prisioners do more than this to earn their keep. They could be spending everyday outside doing something worthwhile for the county that the county pays someone else to do. When those projects run out help neighboring counties.
