Thomasville, GA- Thomas County Sheriff's Deputies say they made only one DUI arrest over the New Years holiday travel period. A number they say they're pleasantly surprised by.

"Makes you feel good that you don't have to make these arrests," said Captain Steve Jones. "The best jail to run is an empty jail and of course society won't allow us to do that, but it's really great that we did not have anymore than the one."

Sheriff's Deputies aren't the only ones reporting safer roads this New Years, State Troopers in Thomasville say they also made fewer DUI arrests compared to other years.

They say it appears drivers are finally taking their warnings seriously and thinking twice before they get behind the wheel after a night of drinking.

Despite the decrease locally, Georgia State Patrol reported an increase statewide.

Numbers released Wednesday show that between 6 p.m. on Friday and midnight Tuesday 321 people were arrested on DUI charges .
262 people were arrested for impaired driving during last years period.

"Our guys are going to be out working as they do 365 days a year," Jones said. "We're not out head hunting, we're not going to be out with extra patrols just to work DUIs. We're going to work the way that
we always work Thomas County and we did, and it was a safe New Years and hopefully we're going to have a safe 2013."

According to a report by Georgia State Patrol, six people lost their lives in fatal car wrecks this holiday period. It's one less fatality than last year.
