Kids Investigate Mock Murder Scene in 'CSI' Camp

-- Valdosta, Ga. -- June 6, 2012 --

It was a page right out of the popular CBS drama, a mock crime scene where the investigators were pint sized and full of wonder. More than 60 kids took part in the three-day Criminal Justice Crime Scene Camp put on by Wiregrass Technical College. The course is designed to teach kids how law enforcement approaches a crime scene. But not everything is as easy as it looks on TV.

The lead instructor Mark Pack said "the main reality check was being out in that sun for 15 to twenty minutes. And [impersonating kid] I'm just so hot! Well you know sometimes a police officer has to sit out there at a crime scene for hours, maybe half a day, 12 hours."

The kids practiced dusting for finger prints and clearing classrooms using fake rifles and riot gear. They also got a chance to interact with a fake scene of a murder. 10-year old Ian Willis learned some crucial information on how to avoid being a suspect.

Ian said "don't pick up the knife that the person killed him with or you'll have to go in front of a judge."

Because the class was so overcrowded, many of the older kids helped as instructors. Tanner Harnage was one of the volunteers. He said "I've had a good experience, the kids have been good and its just, overall it's been fun."

The lead instructor told me that they're planning another CSI camp for the fall.
