Bainbridge, GA- The largest PHA bioplastic production facility in the world has just opened up in our area.
Meredian, Inc., a privately owned biopolymer manufacturer, opened the plant in Bainbridge, Georgia.
On Thursday afternoon, dozens of guests toured the new facility.
Manufacturers use all renewable resources and energy to turn plant particles into pellets, which are then melted down into plastic.
As a result, we get plastic, eco-friendly cups, water bottles, silverware, among many other products.
The new plant is also offering a boost to the local economy.
"Right now we have about 40 employees and over the next two to three years that number could get up to about 150 employees," said Blake Lindsey, the President of Meredian.
The use of bioplastics is also expected to increase more than 15% annually for the next two decades.
The plant's manufacturing will officially get underway within the next two to three weeks.
