Local Animal Shelter Sees Spike In Number Of Cats In Need Of Homes

Thomasville, Georgia-September 18, 2012

A local animal adoption center is having to turn down hundreds of cats due to overpopulation.

The Miss Kitty Feline Sanctuary in Thomasville is a no-kill, no-cage shelter that houses cats and kittens until they can be adopted.

Within the past few weeks, volunteers say they have seen a spike in the number of cats in need of their services.

The organization has been working with the Thomasville Human Society to help place those cats that they cannot take in.

"We're unable to take anymore and people are calling us with, you know, we could probably take one hundred to two hundred cats a week," said Carol Jones, a volunteer at Miss Kitty's. "It's really sad to have to turn that down."

Experts say the overpopulation is a result of the poor economy and people not having the money to spay and neuter their animals.

Miss Kitty's will be hosting an adoption drive on October 6, 2012 at their building located at 425 Covington Avenue Thomasville, GA 31792. For more information call Miss Kitty's at (229) 236-0167.
