Thomasville, GA- Volunteers at the Thomas County Food Bank are on a mission; a mission to make sure thousands of people in the community have a coat on their back and food on their table.
"We have about 75 volunteers a week working here and we serve about 3,000 clients a month," said Janice Anderson, President of the Thomas County Food Bank.
When volunteers realized they were running low on donations, employees at Mimi's: The Look For Less in downtown Thomasville stepped in to help.
"I asked her what she needed for January and she said they were completely out of rice," said Emma Thompson, the manager of Mimi's.
That's when folks at the jewelry store launched, "Rice For Wrists."
"If you bring in a bag of rice, just a regular sized bag, they're around one pound, you get to pick out two bracelets from our 'Rice For Wrists' Collection," Thompson added.
So far, they say the response from shoppers has been huge.
"We've had people bringing in bags and bags," Thompson said. "They just think it's so great to help their community and connect with people."
Anderson with the Food Bank says it's community support like this, that allows them to do what they love and that's help those in need.
"We like to think that we're more than just a pass through for food," she said. "We'd like to think that we're also a group of individuals that have a caring heart and want to make them feel good. That we care; we're not just giving them something to eat."
"We come up here and chat with each other and it's just like family," said Emmie Hurst, a Thomas County Food Bank client. "We go inside and they're the same way. We just appreciate everything that they do for us."
'Rice For Wrists' will go until January 31st. You can drop the rice off at Mimi's which is located at: 106 W. Jackson Street, Thomasville, GA.
The Thomas County Food Bank has also announced plans to expand. Monetary donations can be made to: Thomas County Food Bank, P.O. Box 2422, Thomasville, Georgia 31799.
