Tifton, Georgia- July 20, 2012
It's called Food For Thought and it's helping put food on the table for hundreds of kids in Tifton, Georgia.
"It feels good to know that people here want to help, you know, they're willing to do it, cause I know they don't have to, so the simple fact that they're doing it, is just really nice," said student Marquez Nixon.
The Tiftarea YMCA and the Tift County Board of Education joined forces with dozens of volunteers to prepare hot meals for students Monday through Friday during the summer.
"Right now in Tift County, 68% of kids are on free and reduced lunches and in Turner County 85% of kids are on free and reduced lunches, so we want to be able to make sure those children have adequate meals over the summer," said Stacey McDaniel, the Sr. Director at the Tiftarea YMCA.
Larry Dean grew up in Tift County and now plays in the NFL for the Minnesota Vikings. He was on site Friday to help pass out lunches and get the kids moving.
"It's definitely a blessing just to be put in this position, where you can reach out to so many kids and give back, and make sure they're having a meal," Dean said.
Parents are equally as appreciative.
Linda Brown said, "It gives them a chance to meet the other kids and to help better themselves in life"
Fellow parent Faye Jones added, "It's truly a blessing to know somebody wants to do something good for me and for the kids."
Thanks to a grant from Walmart, the Food for Thought program will be extended until July 28.
