Bainbridge, GA - From an early age Frederick Speights knew he wanted to be a truck driver, but it wasn't until recently that he was able to fulfill this dream thanks in large part to a man he'll never meet.
Donald Alexander shared Speights love of trucking. Alexander was a native of Decatur County and made his dream a reality driving the big rigs up and down I-95. Alexander's 15 year career came to a tragic end in January when he died in a multi-vehicle accident.
''Having to pull together the pieces you know hearing your husband say I've been in an accident and then you hear this horrible sound of metal mangling," said Elisa Alexander
Now Donald's widow Elisa wants to give back to the industry that gave her husband so much job.
The Donald Alexander Memorial Scholarship will be given to a student enrolled in the Commercial Driving License Program at Bainbridge State College.
Through this scholarship Donald's legacy will live on by helping others like Speights so they too can achieve their dreams.
"To knock down some of these finances and things like this also put be on the road to attain my CDL's and getting a job into the field," said Speights.
Since getting the scholarship Speights has received his CDL and will soon by hitting the very same roads that made Donald so happy.
