Local Man Comes Home to Find Burglar

-- Valdosta, Ga. -- May 18, 2012 --

Around 7PM on Wednesday, one Valdosta resident came home to find an unexpected surprise. He returned to his house in the 2300 block of White Oak Drive.. where he found Clifton Baker's car parked in his driveway.

Commander Brian Childress of the Valdosta Police Department explains "Mr. Baker was actually coming out of a back window from the living room area of the house. He was coming out of that window and the home owner did the right thing. And instead of engaging this person, ran around to the front of the house and dialed 911 and did it quickly."

Police arrived on the scene moments after and caught Baker on the spot. He was arrested and charged with Burglary. One neighbor was robbed last year, he's now armed.

Jim Pinson said "in my case if I had had a gun that night I would have shot him. He's in my house it's 3 o'clock in the morning, He's got a hood on and he's got a hatchet in his hand. And he's threatening to hurt me. So what am I going to do? Self defense, yeah I'm going to pull a gun a shoot him."

Police suggest doing the opposite for your own safety.

Commander Childress said "If you do see that kind of thing happening as a homeowner or as a neighbor, do not engage."

Clifton Baker was taken to the Lowndes County Jail. He's been released on bond.
