The Pre-College Program at Thomas University worked with Bishop Hall Charter School students, who participated in Florida State University’s Peace Jam project. The mission of Peace Jam is “to create young leaders committed to positive change in themselves, their communities and the world through the inspiration of Nobel Peace Laureates.”

Pre-College Program staff and Bishop Hall students spent the past few months exploring issues such as peace through conflict resolution and matters related to social justice, poverty, and oppression. The idea is to inspire and empower youth through the work of Nobel Peace Laureates to become problem solvers. This year, with the support and assistance of the Pre-College Programs, Bishop Hall students decided to work with young people in Bukavu, a city in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), who suffer from a lack of access to clean water. Women and children in Bukavu have to walk many miles, often in dangerous conditions, to collect polluted water for drinking and household use.

Bishop Hall students decided to raise awareness with a four mile “Water Walk” from Bishop Hall to the Thomasville Water plant. Students participating in Peace Jam presented their projects, called “Global Call to Action,” to a Nobel Peace laureate. This year’s laureate was Jody Williams, a 1997, Nobel Peace prize winner who won for her work to ban landmines worldwide. Bishop Hall students with the support of the Pre-College Programs developed a creative Global Call to Action presentation for Peace Jam, which was given on Sunday, April 1.

The next phase of the Peace Jam project is to raise approximately $6,000 for a well in Bukavu, DRC.
