[UPDATE] Local Teacher Sent to ICU After Student Attack

Terrence Heflin, 18, was arraigned this afternoon on $15,000 but has not bonded out of jail yet, according to Lowndes County Sheriff Chris Prine.

And Jeffery Criss will likely be released from South Georgia Medical Center today, says Lowndes County schools.


Valdosta, Georgia - April 15, 2011 -

On April 13 deputies of the Lowndes County Sheriff’s Office were notified of an incident at Horizon Academy, located at 1500 Lankford Drive – Valdosta, in which a teacher noticed a student, Terrence Heflin{18 years old} was becoming disruptive and aggressive toward another student. The teacher, Jeffery Criss attempted to intervene and stop Heflin from attacking the student and in the process was struck in the throat causing injury. As a result of this, Jeffery Criss was taken to South Georgia Medical Center for treatment where he was later admitted to the Intensive Care Unit.

Terrence Heflin was arrested and transported to the Lowndes County Jail. Warrants have been issued for the offenses of misdemeanor battery, felony aggravated battery and misdemeanor disruption of public school.

As of this release, Terrence Heflin remains in the Lowndes County Jail and is scheduled to appear before a Magistrate Judge today for an arraignment hearing.
