Decatur County, GA- Pictures of two month old Keymaya Smith tell a terrifying tale. Her mother and father brought her to Bainbridge Memorial Hospital in April 2012.
"The father indicated the child had choked, but there was no fluids in its lungs, there was no substance in its digestive tract; it was clear that this child had been beaten," said South Georgia District Attorney Joe Mulholland.
"Its brain, for lack of a better term, had been turned to mush. Its spine had been severed, its ribs had been fractured. This child really had no chance with those people as parents," he added.
The infant's father, Deonte Smith, was arrested and charged with murder.
He went before a jury in Decatur County last month where attorneys say Keymaya's mother took the stand to defend her boyfriend.
Smith was found guilty of all charges, including cruelty to children, felony murder, aggravated assault and aggravated battery.
At a sentencing Tuesday morning, Smith was sentenced to life in prison.
"He will not be eligible for parole for 30 years so we are obviously happy that he will no longer be a threat to any other children in this world," Mulholland said.
Smith has spent the last two years behind bars at the Decatur County Jail.
He will be transferred to a state prison within the next few days.
