Lake Park, Georgia- July 3, 2012
Letter of Resignation Submitted by Mayor Ben Futch of Lake Park, Georgia:
“Last November, the citizens of Lake Park, Georgia elected me as a “write-in” candidate for Mayor of Lake Park. My platform was to clean up Lake Park and make its government more transparent and fiscally responsible. My goal was to eliminate the negative aura that had clouded Lake Park’s image for too many years.
To accomplish the goals I set as mayor required a cooperative team of both elected officials and citizens conducting themselves in a civil manner. Our accomplishments to date are many, however they have been overshadowed by magnified negativity from the same opposing factions who relish in the status quo from the past, and by Ben Futch bias. The personal bias against me is nothing new and was fully expected, but what impeded our progress was the toll these outside influences took on certain members of the city council. Political decisions concerning Lake Park should be based on what is best for the city, not spite.
Polarizing Lake Park was not my intention, but I have come to the realization that teamwork with me as mayor under these conditions cannot exist. I am no quitter, but I am no fool, either.
I strongly urge the good citizens of Lake Park to require city business to be both transparent and fiscally responsible by regularly attending council meetings and being more involved in the decision-making process.
I sincerely thank my family, city staff and those supporters who have stood with me.
Effective today, July 3, 2012, I am resigning as Mayor of Lake Park, Georgia.”
