The Board of Elections says more than 23,700 people cast ballots on November 2.
Preliminary results show that 49 percent of eligible voters turned out at polling sites across the county.
Election officials say this is a massive turnout.
"Virtually all the polling places had huge, over-running turnouts," said Deb Cox, the supervisor of elections for Lowndes County. " We saw a lot of people voting that hadn't voted in the 2008 elections. A lot of people voting that had been deleted for no activity in two general elections."
The election will be certified once provisional and absentee ballots are counted.
Official results will be released by 9 a.m. Saturday.
