'It Can Wait' Campaign Takes on Texting and Driving

Thomasville, Georgia- August 15, 2012

According to the National Safety Council, more than 100,000 car crashes a year involve drivers who are texting.

"I've actually been driving, texting, and had to slam on my brakes, almost hitting another car and it really spooked me," said Thomasville resident Freddie Robinson. "I could've lost my life."

Robinson is just one of many who are pledging to never text and drive. It's all part of AT&T's new campaign called "It Can Wait."

"Life is too precious to risk for just getting a message that you can wait later to convey," Thomasville resident Rodney Sewell added. "The value of a human life cannot be measured."

The initiative was launched Aug. 15 and aims to raise awareness about the devastation a simple text message can cause.

Something Sam Swaringen knows first-hand.

"In my high school, we had three people die my senior year from texting and driving," he said. "They flipped their cars and died. So it's been impactful to my direct life because I actually knew the kids, so it was pretty terrible."

The campaign encourages drivers to take the no-texting-and-driving pledge, then share their promise through social media sites. A promise that whatever it is, can wait.

"We're supposed to live to be 80 to 100 years and these kids at 17 and 18 are texting and dying. It's not worth it."
