Associated Press Release

SANDY SPRINGS, Ga. (AP) -- A student has been accused of bringing a loaded gun to a Sandy Springs middle school with the intention of shooting someone.

WSB-TV reported that an assistant principal confronted the 13-year-old student on Monday after classmates alerted school officials that he had a gun.

Police said in an arrest report that the 9 mm weapon was loaded and that the student was carrying extra ammunition. The student told police that he was part of a street gang and needed protection. The teen, whose name was not released, has been removed from the school and faces felony charges.

Fulton County Schools Superintendent Robert Avossa said the district is investigating why an assistant principal confronted the student instead of an armed police officer, as required under district policy.
