Atlanta, GA (AP) - Republican John Barge defeated Democrat Joe
Martin to become Georgia's top schools official.
Unofficial returns had Barge with 55 percent of the vote after
71 percent of the precincts were counted.
The Bartow County schools administrator succeeds Brad Bryant,
who was appointed to the post when former superintendent Kathy Cox
resigned in May.
Barge said he was the only candidate with the experience to
understand Georgia's challenges because of his history as a former
teacher, school district official and a state Department of
Education employee.
Martin, a longtime Atlanta school board member, vowed to make
sure Georgia schools would get more money and to stop teacher
layoffs and furlough days.
