ATLANTA (AP) -- Republicans are celebrating a sweeping victory in
Georgia, capturing every statewide office and setting the stage for a fresh era of GOP rule that will hand them control over every facet of state government.

Democrats, meanwhile, are looking at four years of exile. For the first time since Reconstruction, Georgia will have no Democrats holding statewide office when the new regime takes over in January.

The GOP tsunami in Georgia on Tuesday echoed a national wave that shifted power in the U.S. House into Republican hands.

Speaking at a state Capitol news conference on Wednesday morning, Gov. Sonny Perdue said the election showed "the people have convincingly placed their trust and their faith in the Republican leadership -- top to bottom -- to steer this state."
