The students launched rockets of all sizes, shapes and colors behind the school Friday morning.

Amid excited exclamations, they say the fun event capped off a tough lesson on physics and served as a way to celebrate the fast-approaching summer.

Says 8th grader Roni Newberry, "We're launching rockets to learn about Newton's Laws of Physics. We learned lots of things. We learned about opposite reactions."

Teachers say the rockets are a more hands-on way for students to understand the principles of force and acceleration and how they affect an object.

The rocket launch is an annual tradition at Thomas County Middle.

Organizers say the event continues to grow in popularity and size each year.
