Valdosta, GA - An unexpected rise in unemployment.
The Georgia Department of Labor announced the rate in Southwest Georgia is up to 9.2%. That's up a full percentage point from just a month before. It's also higher than the 9.0% average where it sat this time last year.
Labor Officials say the rate jumped primarily because of an increase in layoffs. Unemployment claims rose by 40%. The other factor is new graduates looking for work, coming into the labor force.
Unemployment for Georgia as a whole is also up. It ticked up a tenth of a percent, to 8.3%.
