Fort Benning officials say a tornado that touched down on April 16 caused $2.9 million in damage to two barracks and a training center.
A report from the Directorate of Public Works shows that damage to Building 5124, an unoccupied barracks, and Building 2122, an occupied barracks, totaled $1.35 million. A third building, the Warrior Training Center for the National Guard, had $1.55 million in tornado damage.
In addition, 21 vehicles were damaged or destroyed in the severe storm that struck the Chattahoochee Valley early that day.
George Steuber, deputy garrison commander on post, said damage to the barracks will have no impact on soldiers from the 316th Cavalry Brigade of the U.S. Armor School. He says a contract already is in place to get the repairs done.
