Thomas County, GA- It was rise and shine time for students in Thomas County and Thomasville as they made their way back to school bright and early Monday morning.

"They are so excited," said Stacey Waddell said as she waited in line to drop her children off at school.

Out front of Cross Creek Elementary, sheriff's deputies directed traffic and guided parents through the drop off zone which overlaps with the drop off zone for nearby Garrison-Pilcher Elementary.

"The volume was really high this morning, so the jams appeared to be worse, but like I say, it's 8:15 and we've got this area cleared already; we've had a pretty good morning," said Captain Steve Jones with the Thomas County Sheriff's Office.

Many parents said one of the things they're looking forward to this year is the free breakfast and lunch, which will be provided to all Thomas County and Thomasville elementary and middle school students. It's all part of a new federal program under the 'Healthy, Hunger Free Kids Act.'

"Having three kids in school, it can get expensive, you know, having lunches, so it was really nice to hear that," said mom, Kay Horton.

Wendy Hightower's daughter also goes to Cross Creek Elementary. She added, "I think a lot of people will really really be blessed by that, because even though it wasn't that expensive, it lightens the load a little of the budget of the pocketbook."

The first day for students in Brooks County is Tuesday. Lowndes and Grady County students will start later this week.
