Thomas County, GA -- July 26, 2011
Egg-n-Butter Road residents say their neighbor, Nathan Holt, couldn't stand animals -- especially ones that wandered into his yard.
Says neighbor Danny Carter, "When he gets drunk, there's no telling what the man might do."
Carter says the night of July 22, he heard a gunshot.
He says, "I got up and went outside to investigate and I happened to notice the neighbor next door getting in the back of his pick-up truck with a gun."
The Thomas County Sheriff's Office says an intoxicated Holt had climbed in the bed of his Chevy pick-up with a 12-gauge shotgun.
They say Jerrell Benton, who lived on Holt's property, got in the driver's seat and drove the two down the road.
TCSO says Holt sprayed the side of a neaby home with two rounds of birdshot, some of which almost hit a resident sitting outside.
Investigators say three shotgun shells were recovered from the bed of the pick-up truck after the incident.
TCSO says the event stemmed from Holt and Benton getting angry that two dogs belonging to a different neighbor were loose on the property.
They say alcohol made the men's anger fester.
Says Capt. Steve Jones, "The whole incident was senseless in the way it unfolded. It should've never gotten that far."
Thankfully, no one was injured, including the dogs.
Carter says Holt has a history of being hostile; he says starting in April, tensions rose between them about Carter's pets.
But, Carter and his family maintain Holt is a 'nice man' when he's not drinking.
Holt was arrested and is still being held in the Thomas County Jail.
He's charged with aggravated assault, possession of a firearm during a crime, and DUI.
Benton was also arrested on charges of aggravated assault.
