Things Looking a Little 'Peachier' for Unemployed in GA

Hundreds of people flowed through a maze of tables at Southwest Georgia Technical College Thursday each in search of one thing: a job.

The school hosts a career fair in conjunction with the Georgia Department of Labor each year and says the event is a 'great opportunity' during tough economic times.

Says SWGTC President Dr. Craig Wentworth, "It gives the students and graduates a chance to be exposed to their employers, as well as people from the community come on in."

And things may be looking a little brighter for the unemployed.

Recent numbers (5/19/11) from the Georgia Department of Labor show unemployment is down from where it was a year ago in April 2010.

Those who attended the job fair say they can 'definitely' see a difference.

Says job seeker Angelita Davis, "There's a lot more employees here --and employers here. There's a lot more people here than there were last time."

While most at the event are out of work, some are just looking to change gears.

Jequez Davis is one such person, and says, "I'm already employed, I'm just looking for a career --- something to pursue a career [in]."

The Department of Labor says people can do a few things off the bat to improve their chances of getting a job, including:

- Being prepared for opportunity
- Dressing professionally
- Having an up-to-date resume
- Making your skills transferable and/or applicable to the job

Many of those looking for work say they're more 'optimistic' now than they've been in a while, thanks in part to reports released by the Georgia Department of Labor, saying the state's 9.9 percent unemployment rate is the lowest it's been in two years.
