Thomasville-Thomas County Chamber of Commerce Press Release

In recent years, the day after Black Friday has become known as Small Business Saturday, a day to support the local businesses that create jobs, boost the economy and preserve neighborhoods around the country. Small Business Saturday is a national movement to drive shoppers to local merchants across the U.S. The inaugural Small Business Saturday was held in 2010, and each year the number of people who come together to “Shop Small” in their communities on Small Business Saturday grows, according to research conducted by Echo Research.

The Thomasville-Thomas County Chamber of Commerce, in partnership with the Office of Main Street & Tourism, are embracing this new national tradition by taking this opportunity to remind the residents of Thomas County of the importance of supporting local businesses on November 30 and throughout the holiday season.

Mayor Max Beverly adds his support saying, “These types of programs are vital because they remind our citizens why keeping their dollars in Thomas County is so important. Spending locally not only generates additional sales tax revenue for our community, it sustains the businesses that help Thomasville maintain its ‘small-town’ character.”

Small Business Saturday is a nation-wide effort started by American Express and sponsored by several other organizations. When you get out and shop in your local businesses, you support everything that makes your community great! According to the 3/50 Project, which encourages supporters to spend $50 per month in their three favorite local businesses, $68 of every $100 spent stays in our community when we shop locally versus $43 when shopping at a non-local business.

The Chamber and Office of Main Street & Tourism will be supporting this movement with “Eat. Drink. Shop. LOCAL” stickers provided by Sea Gate Printing that will be distributed to local businesses to give to shoppers in hopes of encouraging their continued support shopping locally. There will also be digital billboards, courtesy of Rose City Outdoors, that will be running in conjunction with this event.

“We are thrilled to be collaborating with the Office of Main Street & Tourism and these Chamber members on this initiative,” says Lauren Basford, Chamber Executive Director. “We see this as the start of a great relationship which will directly benefit our local businesses and community at large.”
