The city of Aiken is considering raising water/sewer rates. (March 23, 2010 / WRDW-TV)

Thomasville Resident Jane Atkins is packing her bags and leaving.

"My last electric bill was 170 dollars which I find really expensive," said Thomasville resident Jane Atkins.

She's not running from the utility increase, in fact she's moving from an apartment into a home . On Tuesday residents like Atkins will see a five to seven percent increase in their water service and sewer rates.

City officials said there will also be rate increases for cable and internet provided through the city in March, 2011 but business owners in the area said rate increases like these have a domino effect.

"Especially in a restaurant business every time something goes up, gas starts to go up the people we buy from they immediately raise the prices," said Thomasville Restaurant Owner Ben Golden.

City officials said the small hike is to fix or replace equipment that may break down something Golden said he has mixed feelings about.

" I understand what the rates are for and everything but I don't agree now's a good time," said Golden.

City officials said cable and internet provided by the city will increase by a dollar in March.

i would love to see "all" the people working in the thomasville utilities department live on a fixed income of $900 or less as i do. this is all about GREED! the city and county could care less about "we the people". all rate hikes should be voted on by the people. not the high paid white collars. most the money they will gain will only go to the utility employee's for pay raises. and has anyone gave it a thought about all the mail fliers the city sends out? how much do they spend on sending out their "junk" mail? it ain't cheap to have that junk mail printed and mailed!

this figures. just how are people on fixed incomes going to pay higher rates? the city and county are already taxing us to death. my mobile home tax has went up double just in the past 2 years. the price of gas has tripled in the past few years. food costs has doubled and tripled. now we are going to pay even more for less. city utilities grossed over $100,000 in the past year. just how much do they think they got to make off the little person. and god you if you call in a utilities complaint. you might be contacted back within a week. or you get answering machine because the person you need to talk to is conveniently not in their office.
