Tifton Police responded to a call of a possible shooting on
704 East Sixth Street Sunday night.

"Once in the area one of the officers was flagged down, discovered there was a 62 year old man in his residence he had apparently been shot one time," said Lt. Lee Dunston of the Tifton Police Department.

Police said Sylvester Downs was shot and killed while playing cards with friends in his home. People at the house reported one man entering through the front of the home with a black and silver handgun, while another came through the back with a bag, screaming "Give me the money!"

"We know that there were numerous people there, we do not know for certain that we've talked to everybody that was there," said Lt. Dunston.

Tifton Police say Downs tried fighting off one of the suspects when he was shot and killed. The police report shows the suspects were dressed in all black wearing gloves and ski masks. Neighbors we spoke with didn't want to go on camera, worried for their safety.

"We did recover some items in the area that are of interest to us but of course it is going to take some time to get that processed," said Lt. Dunston.

The Tifton Police Department asks that you call (229)-382-3132 if you have any information.
