The Old Clyattville Road Bridge was in flames Saturday afternoon (December 28, 2013) after a tractor trailer struck the pillar, causing damage to the bridge.
"The damage that occurred does not effect the structure of the bridge," says Nita Birmingham of the Georgia Department of Transportation.
Birmingham says the damage is cosmetic but is still in need of repair.
Officials say a timetable has not yet been set to make repairs to the bridge, but it is still safe to drive over.
"At this point, repairs have not been scheduled because it is unclear whether the Georgia Department of Transportation will do the repair or if it will be contracted out," Birmingham continues.
The pillar, smoke damage, and the surrounding areas to the road were damaged, but none of it is in need of immediate assistance.
"As far as the discoloration of the bridge from the fire, that will be part of the bridge repair; it didn't cause any damage that will affect the safety or the structural integrity of the bridge," says Birmingham.
