Valdosta, GA - Firefighter safety and rehabilitation are in the spotlight this week across the country.
The Valdosta Fire Department is taking part in International Fire and EMS Safety and Health Week. V-F-D says they expect their employees to perform under extreme conditions, and practicing rehabilitation is the best way to avoid dehydration, and other fire related injuries. They also say when it comes to training exercises, it's important to "train like you fight".
"Everything they're going to run into, they've ran into before. That's not to say that sometimes the fire has it's own mind, and it does things that we may not expect, but we try to simulate conditions they are going to run into on the fire ground as much as we can in training", says Captain Ken Gallagher.
Today, firefighters practiced getting out of their gear and getting in to Kore Kooler Chairs and vests. The new equipment helps them cool down after being in a fire.
