Valdosta, GA - Neighborhood residents are evacuated when police have to talk down a man in an armed standoff.
Valdosta police say 48 year old Willie Brown barricaded himself in his home after his girlfriend called 911 early Saturday morning on East Martin Luther King Drive.
Police say he assaulted her in the course of an argument and she fled the house when he fired a shot into the air with a rifle. Police say he was drunk. Negotiators were able to quickly convince the man to surrender.
"Thankfully within about five minutes of speaking with him, actually less than that, he came out of the residence. He was arrested. No shots were fired at our officers and detectives. We did not have to employ any force on Mr. Brown," said Chief Brian Childress with the Valdosta Police Department.
Brown is in Lowndes County Jail charged with battery, discharging a firearm while intoxicated and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
