Valdosta, GA - It was the first day of school Wednesday for lots of the area's largest school districts. And it was a busy day for students and teachers at Sallas Mahone Elementary School in Valdosta Wednesday.
"Writing and playing with friends and going to lunch," said 2nd grader Reese Steedley.
"We played outside on the playground," said 2nd grader Gehrig Rogers.
Valdosta City Schools has enrolled almost 8,000 students this year. That's a new record for them. But it's still short of the well over 10,000 students starting class Wednesday at Lowndes County Schools.
Several other school districts in our area started the new school year Wednesday as well including Clinch and Echols.
"So far they seem very excited to be back," said Alyssa Bradley, 2nd grade teacher. "It's been a lot of excitement and a lot of new things. The kids have asked a lot of questions."
Authorities remind drivers to be careful on the roadways and remember to stop for school buses as they are picking up or dropping off students.
