To mark the 150th Anniversary of the American Civil War, the Lowndes
County Historical Society has created an original Civil War display
featuring 20 artifacts from the year 1861, the year the first shots were
fired at Fort Sumter.

Historians say 1861 is also the year the railroad first came through
Valdosta.

"Thanks to the railroad coming through Valdosta, this location will be
instrumental to different things such as prisoners being shipped through
Valdosta and the rail hub from the Battle of Olustee," says
Jeremy Petrella, a Valdosta Civil War historian and VSU professor.

Next year's Lowndes Historical Civil War display will portray the year
1862.
