Seventy-three-year-old Delbra Battles is preparing for her home to be torn down and then rebuilt at no cost to her.

It's part of Valdosta's Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) to eliminate substandard housing by 2010 in five revitalization areas.

Battles has reared eleven children here.

She says watching her home come down is bittersweet.

"[I'm] sad and happy that I"m gonna have a new house," said Battles. "But sad that my house is gonna come down because there's so many memories there."

Battles new home costs the city about $90,000 and will be ready in six to eight months.

I think we should all be happy for her. She must be doing something right to deserve this. And as for Fed Up, there are cheap apartments available that would be much better than your mobile home. Sell the property, get over it, and move on.

i am sick n tired of these grants and so called habitat for humanity! WHEN will the white race start cashing in on some of these FREE houses? i have watched for 20 years on who received these new homes. in those 20 years i have NEVER seen not the first home go to a white family. i have asked well over 30 groups, clubs & organizations to PLEASE help me repair my 1970 mobile home. the roof leaks & rusted, bathroom, windows, flooring, electrical, wall covering and more. of all them i had ONE church group come forward. they made a list of the major repairs needed. then i was told they would get back to me within the week to schedule a start time do do the most needed repairs. that was 7 years ago. i NEVER heard anything back from them and tried calling them for 6 months. NEVER to get a call returned. i have several medical problems and 4 heart-attacks within 1 1/2 years. so don't talk minority, low income & all that other B.S. to me, you TRY to survive on $977 a mo. & no food stamp help.
