[UPDATE] Valdosta Inmate Charged with Murder Hangs Himself

[UPDATE] -- Valdosta, Ga. -- April 17, 2012 --

On April 14th at approximately 12:50am, officers at the Lowndes County Jail discovered that 19 year-old Terrell Rizer had hanged himself in his cell. Eyewitness News Reporter Eames Yates spoke to the people that knew him best.

19-year old Terrell Rashaun Rizer was arrested on the morning of April 13. He was charged with the murder of Timothy McKinney. The next day Rizer hanged himself at the Lowndes County Jail.

Lowndes County Sheriff Chris Prine explained the events that led up to Rizer's suicide. He said ""he was observed for a good period of time and then once the nurse came in and examined him and talked with him he assured her three different times that he was not suicidal."

That proved not to be the case when he was found dead in his isolation cell. Rizer had recently turned 19. He was a father of four, including three-week-old Terrell Jr.

Breanna, McCormick, his girlfriend and the mother of Terrell Jr., was asked what kind of man he was. She said "a good one, he loved his kids and his friends."

Terrell's roommate Chris Emanuel said "his grandma and them, they loved him. His momma, I know they loved him. His daddy loved him, his whole family loved him."

His best friend Jeremy McGee said "It's just sad, for Terrell's family and Timothy's Family."

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is conducting an independent investigation into Rizer's death.

Valdosta, GA --April 14, 2012

On April 14th at approximately 12:50am, officers at the Lowndes County Jail discovered that 19 year-old Terrell Rizer had hanged himself in his cell. Emergency Medical Personnel were immediately summoned to the jail and officers and jail medical staff began aiding Rizer. Soon after the arrival of an ambulance, Rizer was transported to South Georgia Medical Center where he was pronounced as deceased.

Terrell Rizer was arrested on Friday, April 13 by the Valdosta Police Department and had been charged with the murder of Timothy McKinney, whose body was found on the railroad tracks Thursday, April 12, in Lowndes County. Rizer was being housed in a cell by himself due to the seriousness of his charges. Sheriff Prine noted that he went to the jail immediately after being notified and his initial review indicates that a proper medical screening was performed during Rizer’s intake to the jail and nothing was found to indicate that Rizer intended to cause harm to himself.

Sheriff Prine has requested the assistance of the Georgia Bureau of Investigation to conduct an independent investigation of the incident. Agents with the Federal Bureau of Investigation were also notified since the incident involved the death of an inmate. The investigation is ongoing and an autopsy will be performed in the near future to determine an exact cause of death.

Sheriff Prine also notified the Chief F. Simons of the Valdosta Police Department since this event is related to the agency's ongoing investigation.

So he has 4 children, he didnt live in section 8, and he didnt have a red, white, and blue card. Personally speaking Terrell was a great man, made some bad choices, but he was still a great man. He did not hide behind a fake screen name and talk trash about people. He supported his children and those children will grow up to be great members of society because they are loved and well taken care of, and not one red cent comes from the government. as for "da blacks dream life" im sure it includes the same things as you, except being judged by skin color is not in the mix.

Jenny how can the "why" not be obvious to you? Were you born last night or do you simply choose not to live in the real world?

You are just plain ignorant! You will face a similiar trajedy and let's see how you respond. 1/8 black blood and you're black, that's YOUR rule. Blacks probably were the first or invented many things that they didn't get credit for because a white person took credit. Also, you racist are always talking about thugs, thugs, thugs. Guess why they are thugs, because America taught them how to be thugs. Because in essence, the good ole U.S.A. is the biggest thug of all. You built this country on stealing, corruption, gangs, bullies, slave owning etc..etc..etc.

Yet another person calling white people racist. Are we all racist or are just a few of us racist? If you call someone a racist enough times that's probably what they will become.

Yeah just look at present day Africa. They STILL live in mud huts and haven't yet discoverd running water or electricity. If it wasn't for the billions of dollars in aid the "racist" U.S. sends there each years millions MORE people over there would be starving to death.

I feel terrible for Terrell's family. Things of this nature would not occur if the LEO's within the county jail would actually 'monitor' the individuals under their watch. It is called a watch for a reason. Having personally heard a young man beat the door of his cell for 3 solid hours in Columbia County Jail for help when his cell mate suffered a heart attack and perished at his feet, I know first hand the flipant attitude of the guards. They have a superiority complex that is rarely rivaled or called into check. Do your job, and guard them with every ounce of your being. Otherwise, find another line of work. Inmates are human, not animals, and innocent until proven guilty. We, the people, are here to love one another as ourselves. We, are not here to judge without mercy, only God in Heaven can do that. May peace and comfort surround the family of Terrell.

i understand what you are saying, but these people risk their LIVES everyday just going in to work. i can't blame them if they don't trust the inmates- why should they?!

He's only 19 and has 4 children. Bet those babies are all receiving public assistance. These children don't have a bright future. Let's hope they don't follow in their fathers footsteps.

First off, you know nothing of his children, two of which are my nieces, they are not on any kind of public assistance, Terrell, their mother, and both families provide very well for them. before you open that hole in your face, you should know what the hell you are talking about. as for their future, its as bright as the sun, because they are loved and well taken care of. My condolences to the Rizer family.
