The Valdosta Public Library will be moving to a new, larger facility.

The 3.7 acre plot of land was just agreed on this past week. It rests at Five Points by the Big Lots.

The current library on Woodrow Wilson Drive is 50 years old and employees say it's age is showing. The new project is estimated to cost around $20 million.

"It'll offer a lot more parking places. Parking has been a problem over the last ten years or so as everybody knows. We'll have bigger facilities for books, materials, computers and new updated equipment and connections as well," said librarian Eric Mathis.

The new library will be funded by a mix between county SPLOST funds, a state grant and the sale of the current facility to South Georgia Medical Center.

$20 million really is a good price, for anyone who knows anything about the cost of building stuff nowdays. For the question about the civic center; yeah, it was supposed to be in the billion range. I am quite happy that they're getting a nicer, new library. The SGMC will probably take over that whole block soon, or VSU who talks of expanding their nursing program. You never know.

20 Million for the library seems awefully steep.. but one is needed I do agree with that much. And why not use some of that land purchased off perimeter road just sitting there rotting. The 5 point land was purchased for a civic center/cultural center was the reporting wrong or did the city lie again? Now that I'm thinking aobout it ..If the plot of land is already owned why is the price tag so high ?!?

Land does not rest. They will be demolishing the current Five Points Shopping Center and Big Lots so not a lot of resting going on. As for the smarty commenting on the cost, buildings cost and if you actually visited the library, you would know that it is a busy place.

$20 Million? I support the idea of public libraries but seriously $20 million? I hope they have an innovative plan to make it work in the 21st century so it is something better than a daycare/homeless shelter.
