[UPDATE] 2/2 at 6:12 p.m. by Gabrielle Sarann --

Lewis Mitchell, Jr., 21, was found guilty of murder in the death of Antonio Mitchell, 24, to whom he's not related.

The jury deliberated for nearly six hours over two days.

They had a number of questions for the judge during that time.

But, eventually they handed down a decision that will change Lewis' life forever.

Thursday afternoon, Lewis Mitchell, Jr. appeared calm and collected in a Lowndes County courtroom as a verdict was reached, despite hours of jury deliberations and the possibility of life in prison.

"We the jury find the defendant on count one, malice murder, guilty," said a Lowndes County Judicial Court employee.

It was Fourth of July weekend in 2009, when the 21-year-old was arrested at Stone Creek Apartments in Valdosta for murder.

Eleven shots were fired, injuring Desmond Jones and killing Antonio Mitchell.

The defense argued the crime was a robbery gone wrong.

But the state counters that Lewis committed murder because multiple gunshots were fired using a high velocity rifle.

As Antonio's family embraced one another, ending a nearly two-year-long nightmare, they say the void will never go away.

"No matter what happened here today, my son will never be back and that is the most hurting part of all," said Velerie May, Antonio's mother.

His father, James Mitchell, added, "At least they can see their child, but I'm glad that justice has been done and he will get what he deserves."

Lewis' family declined to speak to WCTV, but we were able to catch their lawyer for comment.

"I feel we did a good job," said defense attorney Greg Voyles. "Ya know, we live in a jury system and the jurors have returned their verdict."

Antonio leaves behind a two-year-old daughter.

Lewis faces life in prison for murder.

Plus, up to 30 years for aggravated assault and possession of a firearm.

He's back in the Lowndes County jail and will remain there until he's sentenced in March.
