The Georgia Department of labor says the unemployment rate in the Azalea city declined to 8.4-percent.

That's down two-tenths a percentage point from 8.6.

Residents say the unemployment rate is improving but there's still a ways to go.

"I have seen a lot of people get jobs but its still a lot of people ain't working, said Tim Lasane. "It's hard for people to get work."

The Department of Labor says the decrease is because of 400 new jobs added in the Valdosta area.

I am a small business owner in Valdosta and we have been around for 50 years. I have had to cut my staff by half over the past couple of years. Everyday I get phone calls to see if I am hiring and I honestly tell them, I don't know if I'M going to have a job tomorrow. Every other week I get a notice of a company going bankrupt and wonder if we are going to be next. Just last week, I was told that another local company is calling it quits, and they have been a customer of ours for many years. GADOL says that unemployment is at 8.4%, sounds like fuzzy math to me.
